Nest Hair and Beauty, led by experienced stylist Nicola Hutton alongside Kerryann McAdam and student Sophie, continues to grow its presence in the Crosshill Community Business Centre. After 23 years working as a self‑employed hairdresser across various Fife salons, Nicola embraced a new chapter—motivated by her son leaving for university and a milestone birthday—by launching her own salon, Studio 31, within the Crosshill Community Business Centre.

At the end of 2025, Nicola and her team moved location to another Crosshill unit and have rebranded as Nest Hair and Beauty, the team remains committed to meeting the needs of today’s busy clients, offering extended evening hours twice a week  so that they are accessible to people who are unable to fit in a visit to a hairdresser between normal business hours. Please contact them directly on 07856735723 or via  Facebook to book.

We recently spoke to Nicola, Kerryann and Sophie, and asked some questions about her business and here is what they said.

What is your biggest achievement?

Opening her salon and being in a position where she has a space that she shares with the creative, talented and supporting staff members.

Nicola and her team are always learning new technique's and expanding their knowledge to provide the best service possible to their clients. Sophie is currently studying hairdressing at college and the team love to hear all about her course and what advancements and changes have happened since Nicola and Kerryann graduated.

Tell me a fun fact about the business?

The team are all Neurodiverse and they wanted to make sure that NEST is warm, welcoming and a non –judgmental environment where everyone who walked through the doors could chill out and relax.

What advice would you give someone wanting to join your industry?

Go for it! It is an amazing occupation that allows you to use your own creative flair, some days will feel hard but stick with it, it is all worth it and hard work always pays off.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Making clients feel good about themselves and allowing them to forget about their troubles when they are in the salon however if a client is worried about something and wish to share, we are more than happy to step into the role of confidant and counsellor in order to help them so that they leave the salon feeling lighter and as the proverb goes,  problem shared is a problem halved.

What do people need to weary off, if setting up their own business?

There will always be competition, to stand out and attract customers you need to market what make you and your salon unique.

Most important lesson you have learnt, since starting your business?

There is so much more to be done behind the scenes than you imagine and it can create a heavy mental load that rests in your shoulders, make sure that you have supportive family and friends that you can rely on.

What do you do in your spare time to unwind?

Standing on your feet all day is draining therefore plenty of rest is a priority, but the staff do like to go out for a nice meal and some cocktails when they are able.

What is your next goal, personal or business?

Working through my bucket list, the next thing I want to do is have a trip on a hot air balloon.

What is the best thing about your premises/being base here?

Unfortunately, the cost-of-living crisis is still on going, being based here means I have set utility bills, so I do not have to worry about my bills changing every month.

Being a tenant here means that we have access to David, the Facilities Manager. If we have any issues with the unit we just call him and he arranges the repair. We do not have to worry about the cost of the repair or scramble to find a reputable trade’s person to complete the repair.

If you have moved into a bigger/smaller unit within the Community Business Centre's Why and how did this benefit your business?

We have recently moved from unit 31 to 17, although the units have the same amount of space, our new unit is situated at the front of the building next to reception. It has more natural light and we can see everybody as they come and go.

The new unit also has a dividing wall, in the future we are wanting to add a beautician to the staff, and this will allow us to make a private room for treatments.

Why should people come here?

Life is hard and we want to make it easier without breaking the bank. When you visit us, we want to make you feel loved like wee birdies in a Nest!
